Why Successful Women Prefer to Stay Single

A few decades back, society felt sorry and grumbled about men and women who have decided to stay single. It was considered abominable not to marry, and remain a spinster to become an old maid. It was taken for granted that for they would stay with their relatives for their entire life. Men were given warnings of an old age where they would be overcome with a sense of defeat and loneliness if they refused to marry.

But things are not the same anymore. What brought about the change was the entry of women in droves to the workforce. Their jobs enabled them to bring home regular paychecks, which gave both men and women the freedom to decide for themselves when and even if they ever wanted to walk down the aisle. The result is that a good many number of people belonging to both genders have settled into their single status.

One of the reasons of this shift in the disposition is that several women of the contemporary society have seen their mothers having full time jobs. They watched their mothers come home, and then do al the cooking, cleaning and running errands for the family. This was the general situation. In some cases it was because Father was staying back for long hours in the office or had a second job, so that the family could enjoy and afford more luxuries. But in many cases Father was too busy playing golf or fishing with his buddies while Mother struggled to keep everything under control.

Many women feel that to make a marriage work successfully you should spend time together as a couple without the presence of children and you should have the freedom to indulge in your own hobbies. They have no desire to marry before they have a successful career or business. They know they should be well equipped financially to manage all the added tasks marriage and family incur.

Most women also know that building an eminent business or career would need a lot of time and dedication, especially in the initial years. That is the reason why so many women have decided to defer their wedding. They want to spend the required number of years to carve out a place for themselves financially before they take the plunge to marry someone with whom they would share their life and who would father her children.

Because of the elevating rate of divorce, having a fulfilling career is a must than ever before in the past years. When I belonged to the teens, my mother advised me to complete my academic qualifications, make a career out of it, and then get married if I at all wanted to marry some one. This would ensure that if worse comes to worst, and I do get divorced I could provide for myself and my children, and not end up in destitution like so many women face when their husbands leave them behind.

There is a joke doing the rounds through email that there was a young woman who proposed her boyfriend to get married to her. Unfortunately he refused. So she went to parties, took trips with her friends and did all kinds of fun things. This way she lived happily ever after.

Many of the women who are successful today believe in the moral of the apparent joke. They have decided to stay single because a boyfriend is a lot less trouble and way more fun than a husband any day of the week.
