Choosing the Right Keywords is . . . Key!

About 90 percent of all Internet users search for products, services, and information by using keywords and keyword phrases. This means that they go to a search engine or search directory site like Google or Yahoo and type in what they are looking for in the search bar. The search engine or directory brings up the sites that best fit your keyword or keyword phrase.

What's this mean for you? It means that you must have the write keywords, and you must have the right keyword density. To develop your keyword list, write down words that best describe your business, products, and services. Then plug those keywords and keyword phrases into a search engine or search directory, and see what comes up. Are your competitors coming up? Then chances are you are using the right keywords and keyword phrases! Repeat the exercise for all the pages on your site.

Once you have your keywords and keyword phrases, you'll want to optimize your web site for keyword searches. Most online marketers suggest you have a keyword density of about 5 percent. What's this mean? For every hundred words, five should be keywords. Make sure to include keywords in your page titles, headers, Meta tags, and hyperlinks. Don't make the mistake of using the same keywords for every page of your web site! Every page is different, and therefore should have different keywords.

Be descriptive and specific. Most people type in more than one word when doing a keyword search, so combining keywords into short, descriptive phrases is smart. If your site sells fitness clothing for pregnant women it is not enough for your keywords to be "fitness clothing" or "pregnant women". But "maternity fitness clothing" might work, as would "fitness clothing for pregnant women."

If you are still having trouble coming up with your keywords-or if you just don't have the time-there are services that will optimize your keyword selection for a fee. Here are few you might want to try:

Remember, keywords and keyword phrases are key when it comes to customers finding your web site, products, and services. Choose yours thoughtfully and your site will soar to the top of search engines and directories.
